I've Loved You So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t'aime) is the debut feature by award-winning French novelist Philippe Claudel. Already well established in the literary world, Claudel's most famous work to date is the novel Les Âmes grises (Grey Souls), which won the prix Renaudot award in France, was shortlisted for the American Gumshoe Award, and won Sweden's Martin Beck Award. He is also a Professor of Literature at the University of Nancy, where parts of the film were shot. I've Loved You So Long marks the start of a promising film career for Claudel, having already won a host awards including the Jury Prize and Readers' Choice Award at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival at it's premiere earlier in the year.

Synopsis:
Léa (Elsa Zylberstein) and Juliette (Kristin Scott Thomas) are sisters. Juliette has just been released from prison after serving a long sentence. Life together isn't easy to begin with. Juliette has to relearn certain basics. The world has moved on and she often seems confused. Although she may seem cold and distant, her attitude stems more from her being ill at ease. Helped by some, such as the kindly but tactless social worker and her open-hearted but depressed parole officer (Frédéric Pierrot) whose confidante she becomes, Juliette is also rejected by others, particularly employers who throw her out as soon as they find out what she did. But a huge questions hangs over Juliette's renaissance. Why did she do such a terrible thing fifteen years ago? For all the others, it's a recurrent thought that they dare not put into words. And for Juliette, locked away in her secret, it's a burden to bear, which holds her back from engaging in her life and believing that she too has the right to be happy.

Director: Philippe Claudel
Cast: Kristin Scott Thomas, Elsa Zylberstein
Origin: France
Language: French
Subtitles: English
Duration: 112 Mins

JANUARY 14 - JAVA, EMILIE CHICK TRIO, DJS DUBCHAMAN, LARS OLLO

French multi-instrumentalists Java mix rap, hip hop, samba, reggae, ragga, rock, jazz, funk and electro with circus spirit and manic humour.  Java's unique take on urban music blends references from the streets of Paris to the avenues of Rio.  A hit at the Bar in 2005, their woozy accordion, hypnotic grooves and creative sampling make for an energetic, jubilatory live cocktail.

The winner of Gilles Peterson's 2008 Worldwide Festival Talent Search, French-American songstress Emilie Chick unites her sensual voice with electro hip hop DJ collective Dapond members Son of Kick and Mr Fish in the Emilie Chick Trio.  A cumbia beats, reggae, dancehall, gypsy roots and dub specialist, Argentinean born Dubchaman represents the Sydney alternative Latin scene, joined by Lars Chresta, one half of Sydney-based electronica duo Ollo.

JANUARY 27 - CAMILLE, ENTROPIC, DJS BENTLEY, TREVOR PARKEE, JAMES LOCKSMITH

The music of French vocal sensation Camille is unapologetically experimental yet completely accessible. In her mesmerising stage shows Camille dispenses with traditional instruments, save for piano and loop pedal, replacing them with an a cappella ensemble who together build a spectacular soundscape of layered human voices, harmonies, rhythms and chest-beating, foot-stamping body percussion. A capella, beat-boxing, sighs, vocal interpretations of real instruments and beat sequencers, animal noises, body percussion, even hiccups combine with intelligent lyrics, French chanson storytelling and 60s folk and 70s soul influences to produce Camille's truly original sound.

Camille is joined by eletro-acoustic groove mechanics Entropic and DJs Bentley, Trevor Parkee and James Locksmith.

From 8pm til late. Free entry after 11.30pm (pending availability) Over 18s venue only.

THE FUN PETANQUE CHALLENGE
23rd of November
Canterbury Boulodrome

Now some of you may be a bit afraid of the 'C' word (Competition that
is) but you shouldn't be! It is our experience that people enjoy the
added stimulus of friendly competition but also a competition can be
more social. If we play 'social' games, it is more difficult to get
people to circulate. Groups form and tend to just keep playing
together. If all games ended at the same time then we could split
groups up but that doesn't tend to happen that way. In a competition,
when you finish a game against one team you play another. (Usually, in
a competition we play 4 games). Also, in a casual situation people
arrive at different times and it is harder to get them into a game as
most people are already playing! In a competition everyone must be
there at the start and stay till the end. See what I mean?
The Boules Artistes will provide the equipment and refresher courses
and run the competition! There will be great prizes! We will fire up
the espresso machine and have great coffee and cakes! We will start at
1:30 and finish at around 5:00. Cost will only be $10! We will hold
the FUN PETANQUE CHALLENGE at the Boulodrome! Canterbury Bowling Club,
Close St Canterbury
Right next to Canterbury Train Station (just 15mins from Central), the
445 bus stops here (Balmain, Leichhardt, Petersham, Dulwich Hill thru
to Canterbury)

MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER: DAVID ET JONATHAS

Ailleurs dans le monde de la francophonie...

à l'Alliance Française de Sydney:
Thursday 16 October
Debate: The Fifth Republic at 50
-  In 1958, the 'first couple' of France were Charles and Yvonne de Gaulle; 50 years later, it's Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni. One can hardly imagine a bigger difference in presentation, personality and the personification of politics. How has the political class changed in the last 50 years?
One of General de Gaulle's ambitions was to reestablish and maintain French 'grandeur' in world affairs. How much 'grandeur' does France has in culture, politics, economics and diplomacy 50 years later?
In the 1950s, Paris was the capital of the nouveau roman and the nouvelle vague in cinema. Is Paris still a cultural and intellectual capital?
- The constitution of 1958 was made sur mesure for de Gaulle and his supporters. Does France now need a Sixth Republic?
The debate will be conducted by Liz Rechniewski (Senior Lecturer in French Studies, University of Sydney); Denise Fisher (Former Australian Consul- General, Nouméa); Aaron Ridgway (Journalist, Canberra Times); Matthew Graves (Lecturer, Université de Provence); Matthew Krasovitsky (Student, University of Sydney; former student, Sciences Po, Paris); Caitlin Tobin (Student, University of Sydney; former student, Sciences Po, Paris) and the moderator will be Robert Aldrich (Professor of European History, University of Sydney).
AF Gallery 6.30pm - 8pm All welcome!
No access to the building after 7pm

PRESS RELEASE ___________________________________________________24th September 2008____ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"A musician, singer, clown and poet – all at the same time,
ronan/ronan is a magic trick in himself"
La Nouvelle Republique

"in the pursuit of bubbling genius"
La Nouvelle Republique

AUSTRALIA TOUR 2008
25th Sept to 31st October

Magic Roundabout Music Promotions, Café Lounge, Splash Industry (FR) and Flying Fish Media are very happy to introduce French Chanson Bricolee musician Ronan/Ronan on his first tour to Australia......

Banjo Player and singer of Fils de Teuhpu Ronan Guittier travels direct from the small french village of Montreuil to Australia
to perform his Solo Show Ronan/Ronan and launch his album "Copie/Colle".

With 26 shows throughout Australia, Ronan/Ronan will be playing an eclectic selection of Festivals and venues, starting with shows in the pristine World Heritage forests of Cape York's Wallaby Creek Festival to Brisbane Powerhouse to NZ Nelson Arts Festival to the beautiful Famous Spiegeltent at Sydney Opera House. With many dates in between, Ronan/Ronan tours to a venue near you to perform a very special show.

On the stage Ronan creates his music completely live. In a joyous bric-a-brac of colour, turntable decks,  children's toys and a box full of treasures, Ronan/Ronan creates his poetic, lyrical mayhem, performing light hearted yet haphazard songs that you may just find yourself singing along to!!

Surrounded by an array of different acoustic instruments and a loop pedal, Ronan experiments and creates his own musical universe – amusing, entertaining and poetic all at the same time. His performance is visually amazing and teeters on the edge of comedy and surreal musical madness.

Ronan's Instruments include Plastic train, banjo, 'moo' box, turntable, ukulele, hand-saw and log of wood,  the 'music star' toy, trumpet, aspirin, cymbals, 'squawk' box harmonica, whistle, small bells, door slamming, rustling of plastic bags and so on......

With his warm smile, a cheeky look and a loaded shelf, Ronan/ronan, the true one man orchestra, will wind you up like a clock!
