Frenchsoc Newsletter: Mid Semester Break!

If you're not going away during the Mid Semester Break, join us at the Open Night of Alliance Française at their new building! 

 

Alliance Française Open Night

6.30pm, Thursday 1 October, Alliance Française, 257 Clarence St, Sydney

Alliance Française is holding an Open Night in their brand new building! There'll be wine and food tasting, short films, short "try me" classes, French music, and speed testing of your French level. To help you find your way to Alliance Française, Frenchsoc execs will be meeting at two places on Thursday night then making their way to Alliance. You can either:
Meet Steff at Fisher Library at 6 pm. The Fisher group will take the bus to Town Hall and walk together to the Alliance Francaise.  Or
Meet Kath at Town Hall steps at 6:15pm (this time may change slightly, check the facebook event for final details).

Seminar: Changes to General Skilled Migration and Pathways to Permanent Residency

Acacia Immigration Australia is holding free on campus immigration consultations at International House fortnightly this semester. They will also be holding a seminar on Wednesday the 23rd of September on the changes to General Skilled Migration and what students can do to better their chances for Permanent Residency after graduation. Frenchsoc AGM coming up in Week 10!

Salut tout le monde!

 

Notice of the Frenchsoc Annual General Meeting

Thursday 8th October, 4-6pm, The Loggia, Manning House (Room behind Zabeli's)

The Frenchsoc AGM is coming up in Week 10! The aim of the AGM is to elect a new Executive team to run Frenchsoc in 2010, and to also vote on some changes to the Frenchsoc constitution. We'll also be providing some yummy French nibblies for all members who come along!

 

Nominations are now open for all positions on the Frenchsoc Executive (See below) and will close on the day of the AGM at 4pm. If you're interested in nominating yourself for one of the executive positions on the Frenchsoc committee, please email frenchsoc.usyd@gmail.com with your name, access number and position you are nominating for. Only people with access cards are eligible for nomination. If you have any questions at all about the AGM, roles of exec positions etc, please email frenchsoc.usyd@gmail.com or ask any of the current exec at a future event!

 

The positions up for election and their roles are:

 

The President shall:

 

i)          Plan the Society's activities in consultation with the Executive.

ii)         Liaise with the Executive and any Committees formed by the Society.

iii)        Ensure an adequate handover, including any documents and materials, to the following Executive.

 

The Vice-President(s) shall:

 

i)          Deputise for the President.

ii)         Be responsible for international affairs (students and programs).

 

The Treasurer shall:

 

i)          Maintain the Society's finances in accordance with the Treasurer's Handbook produced by the Clubs and Societies Office of the University of Sydney Union.

ii)         Present to the Annual General Meeting of the Society a report detailing the financial activity and status of the Society.

iii)        Ensure an adequate handover, including any documents and materials, to the following Executive.

 

The Secretary shall:

 

i)          Conduct the correspondence of the Society.

ii)         Book meeting rooms for the Society.

iii)        Keep minutes of the proceedings of all Society meetings.

iv)        Maintain the records and documents of the Society.

v)         Maintain a list of current Members, in accordance with University of Sydney Union Guidelines.

vi)        Maintain the Society's registration with the University of Sydney Union.

 

The Publicity Officer shall:

 

i)          Be primarily responsible for coordinating the Society's means of  publicity (flyers, printing etc).

 

The Language Officer shall:

 

i)          Be primarily responsible for language related activities, in particular, coordinating and maintaining conversation groups.

ii)         Act as liason with the Department concerning their seminars and events.

 

The Social Events Coordinator shall:

i)          Be responsible for organising, managing and coordinating the Society's social events.

 

The General Executive Members shall:

i)          Contribute to the general running of the Society and assist other Executive Members in their duties.

 

 

The proposed constitutional changes are:

 

3.3       The subscription fees for membership shall be:

i)          Ordinary Membership $4

 

4.1       The Society shall have an Executive consisting of:

 

i)          a President

ii)         one Vice President

iii)        a Secretary

iv)                a Treasurer

v)                   an Administrative Officer

vi)                a Publicity Officer

vii)              up to 2 Language Officers

viii)            up to 4 Social Events Coordinators

ix)                and up to a further 6 General Executive Members.

 

 

5.3    The Treasurer shall:

 

i)    Maintain the Society's finances in accordance with the Treasurer's Handbook produced by the Clubs and Societies Office of the University of Sydney Union

ii) Communicate regularly with the Administrative Officer.

iii) Be responsible for reimbursements, including writing cheques, as and when requested by the Admin officer.

iv) Be responsible for management of the cashbox, banking income and any cheques received.

v)    Present to the Annual General Meeting of the Society a report detailing the financial activity and status of the Society.

vi)    Ensure an adequate handover, including any documents and materials, to the following Executive.

 

5.4    The Administrative Officer shall:

i) Be responsible for the filing of pre- and post-event forms (removed ) for all language activities of the Society, including but not limited to conversation groups, study groups and cafe rendez-vous.

ii) Upon receipt of reimbursement forms, submit a weekly reimbursement request form to the Treasurer, listing the relevant events, expenditure and name of the person to be reimbursed.

ii) Liase with the Treasurer and assist the Treasurer.

 

 

The agenda for the Annual General Meeting shall include:

            1.         Opening and welcome

            2.         Apologies and leaves of absence

            3.         Minutes of the previous meeting

            4.         Business arising from the minutes

            5.         Correspondence

            6.         Motions on notice- Proposed constitutional changes

Closing Session of the Silent Film Festival: Georges Melies – The First Wizard of Cinema (France)

3.30- 5:00 pm, Sunday 25th October, Dixon Room, State Library of NSW, Macquarie Street Sydney. $25/$15 concession.

A very special treat concludes the Silent Film Festival and will remain vivid in viewers' minds for a long time.  The fascinating and extraordinary films by French cinema pioneer, Georges Melies will entertain, amuse and enchant everyone.   It will also surprise many to see special effects used in motion pictures as early as 1896! 

These jewels of cinema will be accompanied by Mauro Colombis, the internationally esteemed silent film accompanist

This session presents a select choice of some of his best-known films and also rarely-seen ones, and they are important to the serious cinema enthusiast as well as simply enjoyable entertainment for the general public.

Verge French Film Night

5.30-9pm Wednesday 9th September, Verge Festival Tent, Manning Road

 

Visit the Festival Tent for a classy evening of French sophistication presented by FrenchSoc. Reflecting the spirit of Verge 2009, the evening will traverse the old and the new - the classic French film 'Masculin-Feminin' at 6pm will be followed by an interlude of music, drinks and canapés before the contemporary French film 'L'auberge espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) kicks off at 8pm. Ooh la la!
Food and one drink included with entry. Proudly supported by Hopscotch Films and The Department of French Studies. The films will have English subtitles.

Verge Festival Poetry Reading: French Poetry Déclamation, Le thème : l'ancien/ le nouveau.

5-6pm, Thursday 10th September, Holme Reading Room

Interested in French poetry? Come along and listen to French students reciting their favourite poems this Thursday! If you have a favourite poem you'd like to read or recite on the day, just email Christel Rome (christel.rome@usyd.edu.au) to get approval for the poem you've chosen, which should fit in with the theme "l'ancien/le nouveau."  There will be a prize for first place!!

Soirée Portes Ouvertes/After Hours Open Day of the Alliance Française Centre

6.30pm-9pm, Thursday 1st October, Alliance Française Centre.
